Horio 2015 影像Video 21'13" What does retro mean? Have we gone so far forward, we have to return to the past to feel new again? Is there a part of us that always longs for the past and unable to move forward? Or do we simply have memories from a former life? Part of a series of vignettes created by C. Kenneth Lee. In this short film, Lee captures one of the last remaining Gutai Japanese Artist, Sadaharu Horio in the process of utilizing his body to paint (one of the esthetics of the Gutai Japanese Art Movement) . Lee goes as far as adding a retro element to this film...an homage to retro 60s and 70s art films. Does retro mean backwards? What does the word "backward" mean for us? Lee reverses the entire performance of Horio, giving us a whole new look at what retro may mean? Lee continues to be inspired by David Lynch and Andy Warhol's shorts. |

****LITERATURE multiple author, 2015 New Art Wave Expo, NAW Publishing, Macau, 2015 Painted as a tribute to Norwegian artist- Edvard Munch's painting, "The Scream" and British artist- Sir John Everett Millais's "Ophelia." The dull colors swirl violently as the individual screams as if he or she is drowning in something. One can interpret the individual sinking under the green marsh. The victim is in deep anguish and emotionally disturbed. |
