Ashes to ashes dust to dust
2018 Mixed Media (pebbles, various paper scraps and acrylic on canvas) 48 x 36 inches ---------------------------- After taking a break from his previous work and styles, Lee began searching for a new esthetics and methods of painting. Lee was fed up with the many mixed comments he heard from when he was exhibiting at art fairs. Lee felt that it was distracting and unhelpful. In this new work, Lee returns to darker morbid tones that reminisce the day when we will all return to dust. |

Selfie Polaroid Series
2009 -present Digital Photography Created as an homage to Warhol's Polaroid "self-portrait" photo series. But these are of course not Polaroids but digital photographs. Lee describes himself being sucked into the Facebook culture, and somewhat acquiring a love hate relationship with social media and the obsession with recording our every move. "I don't think we are any different than the period between 1958-1987 when Warhol made his Polaroids. Now we have Instagram. I don't think we can leave our home without our cell phones nowadays."
By commencing this collection of selfies , Lee made a lifelong goal to take a selfie with as many celebrity contemporary artists as possible before they die. (Lee then coughs out the name, Pollock) |

(from the "Retro Series") 2015 Digital Photography Series Dimensions variable **** After Lee's painting and photo exhibition at The 2015 New Art Wave Expo at THE VENETIAN MACAU, Lee took a break with painting, and focused more on photography. Lee's fascination with retro and neo-retro 60s/70s photography led him to began experimenting, citing and paying tributes to Warhol, Arbus, and a bit of Demarchelier |
Horio 2015 影像Video 21'13" What does retro mean? Have we gone so far forward, we have to return to the past to feel new again? Is there a part of us that always longs for the past and unable to move forward? Or do we simply have memories from a former life? Part of a series of vignettes created by C. Kenneth Lee. In this short film, Lee captures one of the last remaining Gutai Japanese Artist, Sadaharu Horio in the process of utilizing his body to paint (one of the esthetics of the Gutai Japanese Art Movement) . Lee goes as far as adding a retro element to this film...an homage to retro 60s and 70s art films. Does retro mean backwards? What does the word "backward" mean for us? Lee reverses the entire performance of Horio, giving us a whole new look at what retro may mean? Lee continues to be inspired by David Lynch and Andy Warhol's shorts. |

In 2013 I actually got to appear in my 3rd TV acting cameo in an Asian TV Series. I have never actually seen the storyboards. But imagine that I didn't have to do it for TV and that I could do it backwards...TV episode coming first before the storyboard, yikes! right? |

血 腥 的 花 Bloody Flower #1
2014 紙糊雕塑Paper Mache Sculpture Tba dimensions ------------------------ EXHIBITED
"Bloody Flower#1" was created during the same year when the famous French sculptor Paulo Grangeon created 1600 Panda Maches and brought them to Hong Kong to spread awareness about the endangered bear and stimulate dialogue around sustainable development. But "Bloody Flower" is anything but cute. This is not your cute, bright colored, dancing, and singing daisy. This is a hurt, beaten up, injured flower that reflect the constant hurt in the natural environment by constant renovations in buildings, exhaust from the over populated buses and public transportation that are trapped by many tall skyscrapers, boat diesel fuel that constantly overflow into the ever-shrinking harbor, and the many visitors that exhale toxic chemicals wrapped in thin cylinders. This flower is wrapped in white badges with blood soaking through as if it was waiting in the emergency room. Air pollution has been a constant problem affecting both the health of citizens of Hong Kong, the air, and its scarce natural environments. Cases of asthma and bronchial infections have soared in recent years due to reduced air quality. We are not just talking about flowers, but everything from fake foods, toxic chemicals sprayed to plants and how food is treated in the city before it reaches restaurants. As people say, "We are what we eat." If we eat these toxic plants/foods, we become the toxic plants/foods. "Bloody Flower #1" is quite graphic and purposely stands out during its first appearance in The 2014 Hong Kong Arts Centre Paper Mache Sculpture Exhibition held at The Hong Kong Y-Square. |
